Add Transitions to a Video

Turn hard cuts into smooth ones: a crossfade blends one shot into the next, a fade through black dips the picture and sound out and back in. The video stays on your device.

Add Transitions

How to Add Transitions to a Video

  1. Open your video in the video editor. Cut out the parts you don't want, or add more clips with Merge: every cut and every join between clips gets a transition.
  2. In the Transitions tool on the left, press Crossfade or Fade through black. None keeps hard cuts.
  3. Set how long it takes with Length, from 0.2 to 2 seconds.
  4. To choose another transition at one join, open More options and change it there; the others keep Same as all.
  5. Press Save MP4 at the top right.

Questions

Does a transition make my video shorter?

No. The video keeps its length: the transition happens around each join instead of overlapping the two clips.

What happens to the sound?

With a fade through black, the sound fades out and back in with the picture. With a crossfade, the sound joins as it does at any cut, without a click.

How does the crossfade work?

Around the join, each clip is blended with a still picture of the other: first the clip that ends with the first frame of the next one, then the next clip with the last frame of the one before. On a short length it looks like a soft dissolve.

Why is my transition shorter than I set?

A transition can't be longer than the clips on either side of the join, so next to a very short clip it is shortened.
