Remove Background Noise from Audio

Take steady background noise like hiss, hum, fans and traffic out of a recording, and hear the result before you apply it. The cleaning runs in your browser, so the recording never leaves your device.

How to Remove Background Noise from Audio

  1. Open your recording in the audio editor and choose the Noise tool on the left. It learns the noise from the quiet parts between words and says how much it found.
  2. Pick Light, Medium or Strong. Start with Medium.
  3. Press play. With Hear it while playing on, you hear the recording without the noise; try the other strengths until the voice still sounds natural.
  4. Press Remove noise from the whole file. To clean only a part, drag across the waveform first; the button then says Remove noise from the selection. The tool shows how much quieter the noise got.
  5. Press the save button at the top right (Save MP3, Save WAV or Save M4A).

Questions

What kind of noise can it remove?

Steady noise that stays the same all the way through: hiss, hum, a fan, air conditioning, a computer, distant traffic. It can't take out music, other people talking, or sudden sounds like a door or a cough; cut those out with the Cut tool.

What if my recording has no pauses?

The tool then learns from the quietest stretches it can find. If that picks up your voice, find a moment with only the noise, drag across it, and press Use the selection as the noise sample. Use the quiet parts again goes back.

My voice sounds thin or underwater. What can I do?

Use a lighter strength. Under More options, leave Keep a little of the background, so voices don't sound underwater ticked (it is on to begin with): leaving a little noise sounds more natural than complete silence. The strength slider there gives finer steps.

Can I undo it?

Yes. Press Ctrl+Z, or the undo arrow under the waveform. Nothing changes until you press the remove button.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. The noise is learned and removed in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere, and there is no account.
