How to Improve Voice Audio

  1. Open your recording in the audio editor and choose the Filters tool on the left.
  2. Pick a filter: Voice clarity, Warm, Bass cut or Telephone, and set the Strength.
  3. Press play. With Hear it while playing on, you hear the filter as the recording plays; change the filter or the strength until it sounds right.
  4. To change only a part, drag across the waveform to select it. Then press Apply to the whole file; with a selection, the button says Apply to the selection.
  5. Press the save button at the top right (Save MP3, Save WAV or Save M4A).

Questions

Which filter should I use?

Voice clarity for a voice that sounds dull or boomy, as laptop and phone microphones often make it. Warm for a voice that sounds thin or harsh. Bass cut for rumble from traffic, air conditioning, a desk or handling noise. Telephone as an effect, for example a voice on a call in a video.

Does it remove background noise?

Only low rumble and hum, with Bass cut. For hiss, a fan, air conditioning and other steady noise, use the Noise tool next to Filters; see remove background noise from audio. Neither can take out music or other voices.

It got louder, or it distorts. Why?

Voice clarity and Telephone lift some frequencies, so the result can be louder. Lower the strength, or level the file in the Loudness tool afterwards; the message under the tool warns you when it goes over full scale.

Can I undo a filter?

Yes. Press Ctrl+Z, or the undo arrow under the waveform. Nothing changes until you press Apply, so you can listen as often as you like first.
